Earlier, Xi swore in Carrie Lam as Hong Kong's first female Chief Executive.

Warned that security forces would be working overtime to stop crowds and banners from appearing on July 1, the 20th anniversary of Britain's handover of Hong Kong to China, the protesters made a decision to turn the tables by making this official object disappear - if only briefly.

Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed Saturday that Hong Kong will continue to be run under a principle that guarantees it broader autonomy but warned against attempts to go against mainland China.

Experts said that the statements given by Xi are the strongest yet and it shows that China is getting increasingly annoyed with pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong.

They were taken away by police after a pro-Beijing group tried to confront the group that included activist Joshua Wong, but were later released.

But he said Hong Kong had to do more to shore up security and boost patriotic education, apparently referring to pieces of legislation long delayed by popular opposition.

China has been cracking down on dissidents in Hong Kong to preserve the stability it desires.

Thinking about these events, we're struck by how much of the recent history of Hong Kong - and of mainland China, too - can be seen as a series of struggles over appearance and disappearance.

During his speech, Xi portrayed the "one country, two systems" formula, which ensures Hong Kong will retain its ways of life and freedoms after the handover, as a "new idea, new path" for the worldwide community to tackle similar sovereignty issues.

One of the abducted booksellers, Lee Bo, drew global attention because he was a dual Hong Kong and British citizen, prompting London to rebuke China for a "breach" of Hong Kong's law.

Under Spanish law, a first-time offender is not required to serve time in jail for a sentence below two years. Mascherano was also convicted of tax fraud last year and was given a suspended one-year sentence.

But Hong Kong is a very divided city.

The young democracy activists are calling for self determination and universal suffrage, but unlike the older generation of opposition politicians, they have questioned the validity of Hong Kong's Basic Law and constitution.

During his visit Xi has pledged support for Hong Kong and assured that its semi-autonomous system of government is intact.

Protesters carried banners with the words "Democracy".

"The people of Hong Kong, now masters of their own house, run their local affairs within the purview of autonomy of the HKSAR", he was quoted as saying by China's state-run Xinhua news agency.

In the morning of July 1, after Lam and her cabinet members took their oaths, Xi took the podium at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre to deliver a 30-minute speech.

"When taken together, the more direct statements, the greater pomp, and the tighter security combined signal a significant ramping up of the intensity and boldness of Beijing's efforts to rein in [Hong Kong's] ability to function as a city that is much freer - not just slightly freer - than any mainland metropolis", he said. "They remove a lot of the facts", said Kelsey Chan, a resident. People marched with signs criticizing the Chinese president, while others called for the end of the Communist Party of China. The possibility of another anti-Beijing rally, such as that of 2014, when young people and other residents occupied Hong Kong's center, can not be ruled out.

"The Taiwanese government believes that Hong Kong citizens expect reforms and democracy".

"Now Hong Kong has returned to the motherland's embrace for 20 years, the Sino-British Joint Declaration, as a historical document, no longer has any practical significance and it is not at all binding for the central government's management over Hong Kong", Lu said.

But that's not the attitude of William Hon, the trader who grew up in Hong Kong.
