"Messenger is dedicated to building new and creative ways to help businesses and developers connect with the more than 1.2 billion people around the world who use the platform every month", the post further stated. But Facebook says a small percentage of people around the world, including in the U.S, will start to see Messenger ads in the coming weeks. That said, companies are free to direct you to external destinations such as their websites once you tap on an ad.

Home screen ads on Messenger will use the same user-targeting capabilities that are already being used by Facebook and Instagram.

The ads will start rolling out slowly.

Click to Message ads were first seen as early as 2015 while Facebook started testing Sponsored Messages ads back in April 2016. "And going forward, there are some other business models we are exploring as well, but they're all around ads one way or another".

Blanchford wasn't able to disclose how many Australian businesses actually tested the app for Facebook Messenger, however according to the same report, Mumbrella were able to confirm that high end Australian department store, David Jones, has taken part in the beta trials. But Facebook has at least mercifully refrained from inserting ads into your actual conversations - for the time being, that is. Facebook has to generate revenue from its services but they have to make sure that their financial interests don't get in the way of the app's user experience.

These will show up inside the home screen of Messenger, where you now see your most recent chats. "I doubt people will be overwhelmed by ads in their message list", said eMarketer principal analyst Deborah Aho Williamson.

Though ads aren't leaving Facebook's products anytime soon, the platform will probably do its best to target promoted messages to users, so it feels more like a shopping suggestion rather than an intrusive banner shoved in the middle of your conversations. Facebook has developed an in-app payment system that allows someone to transfer money to other users, including companies a user is making a purchase from.
