A total of 714 MPs voted in the Presidential polls in Parliament House. The presidential race, which will be hung on July 17, has Ram Nath Kovind as the applicant bolstered by the decision National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and Meira Kumar - the primary lady to end up Lok Sabha speaker - as Opposition competitor. The new President will take over on July 25. A candidate will need 50 percent-plus votes, which is around 5,49,452 votes, to be elected as the next President of Republic of India. 771 of the 776 MPs were eligible to vote for the presidential elections, with 2 vacancies each in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
The total strength of the electoral college is 10,98,903 votes, with each Parliamentarian carrying a vote value of 708.
Among the first to cast the votes was Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As voting picked up, many MPs were seen queuing up in Parliament House outside the polling booth in Room No. 62 for the voting.
The ruling BJP exuded confidence that Kovind would win with a "comfortable" margin, while the Opposition said its joint pick Meira Kumar was the best choice in the "clash of ideologies".
Out of the 234 MLAs in TN Assembly, RK Nagar seat is vacant and Karunanidhi is not scheduled to vote and the rest of 232 legislators voted.
