  • Social Media Sites Blocked In Kashmir Valley Ahead Of Burhan Wani's Death Anniversary

Disputed Kashmir has seen an explosion of protests against Indian rule since government forces shot and killed Burhan Wani a year ago.

Army's Northern Command chief Lt. Gen D Anbu, accompanied by Chinar Corps Commander Lt. Gen J.S. Sandhu, visited areas in North and South Kashmir to review the security situation and measures put in place for ensuring peace and calm in the Valley, a defense spokesperson said here.

The call for a strike to mark Wani's killing was given by local Kashmiri separatist leaders and by a Pakistan-based militant commander, Syed Salahuddin, whom the United States last week added to its list of global terrorists.

A woman was injured in clashes between protesters and security forces in Kashmir on Saturday as authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions in the valley to foil separatists' plan for a rally in Tral town to commemorate the first death anniversary of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani.

Burhan's killing, which sparked violnet unrest across the Valley, spawned a "new-age militancy" with young, educated Kashmiris joining terror outfits.

Burhan Wani, a commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen famous for appearing on social media in military fatigues to attract young people to join the fight against Indian forces, was martyred in southern Kashmir on July 8 a year ago.

The AJK Prime Minister asserted that Indian government and troops have to leave the valley because they can not suppress Kashmiris. The situation across the Valley remained tensed for nearly six months previous year, resulting in the death of around 100 civilians and three security men.

The rest of the valley faces restrictions on movement, J&K police has said, according to PTI.

Despite this protests were reported from different parts of the Valley. The Indian government said that Islamabad was praising a terrorist belonging to a prohibited terrorist group.

The prime minister said the martyrdom of Wani is a testimony of the fact that Kashmiris have completely rejected the Indian occupation.

India and Pakistan trade blame over deadly shelling on the anniversary of the death of rebel leader, Burhan Wani. Despite a ceasefire agreement that was reached in November 2003, sporadic skirmishes continue in Kashmir. Hashtags like #TeamBurhan and #HangKulbhushan have several thousand hits in Kashmir region, and trolls propagate the idea that India is spreading terrorism in Pakistan.
