  • Notorious 86-year-old jewel thief Doris Payne arrested again — at Walmart

She was charged with a misdemeanor. The incident took place at around 5 p.m. EDT on Monday.

By her own admission, Payne has been stealing jewelry from high-end stores around the world for six decades.

This time, according to police, Payne stole $86.22 worth of goods from the Walmart on Chamblee Tucker Road in Dekalb County.

"Thieving was the farthest thing from my mind", she told NBC News in a phone interview Tuesday. The crew following her appear to take stories of her adventures at face value, Variety said.

"I don't have any regrets about stealing jewelry", she says in the film's trailer. Some items were loaded into her grocery cart, but others were stowed in her purse and a shopping bag.

She was found wearing an ankle monitor from a previous arrest for shoplifting.

"She never hurts anybody", the attorney said. He noted that Payne's most recent alleged theft does not "fit" into prior acts - no earrings, no pendant, and no brooch. She was at Walmart.

When the associate pulled out items, she would keep them distracted by pulling out more so that eventually they would forget how many items they had placed on the counter, giving Payne the opportunity to swipe an item or two. She was sentenced to four years in prison, but released three months later because of jail overcrowding.

Her biggest known theft came in the 1970s when she was arrested for clipping a $500,000 diamond ring. She had attempted to steal a necklace nearly worth $2,000 from Von Maur department store at the mall, CBS News reported. She is thought to have stolen $2 million in jewellery and was profiled in a 2013 documentary, reports said. "We're talking about what an 86-year-old woman needs to survive on a day-to-day basis, food supplies and medical supplies". "I regret getting caught". She told the Los Angeles Times her first diamond heist was in her 20s, committed in an effort to earn enough money for her mother to leave an abusive husband.
