  • 'Moonlight' Star Mahershala Ali in Talks for 'True Detective' Season 3

As HBO ponders the possibility of a third season of True Detective, it appears Oscar victor Mahershala Ali could soon have a deal to star. Fresh off an Oscar win for his supporting role in Moonlight, Ali is a flawless pick for the lead in True Detective.

A few months back we reported that writer and producer David Milch - of Deadwood and N.Y.P.D Blue fame - would be joining series creator Nic Pizzolatto in the script-writing process.

True Detective has been off the air for two years following a mediocre second season that starred Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams, and was set in L.A. The first season, featuring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, set in the Deep South, was awesome television.

If rushing a second season was the reason behind Season 2's demise, then the two year break between now and then should have fans at ease for the new True Detective. After it came to an end, nothing was ever mentioned regarding a third season of the show. At the time he assured that while there hadn't been anything greenlit yet, there was always room to reconsider bringing the show back if the right story was written. "We are hoping for a third season". The Oscar-winner will all but officially lead the next season of Nic Pizzolatto's HBO anthology. "It's not dead; I'm just not sure we have the right take for a third season - yet".

Here's a sentence that feels truly handsome to type: Mahershala Ali is in talks to join True Detective Season 3.

Stay tuned for more information on a potential third season of "True Detective" as information becomes available. I became too much of a network executive at that point.

The rumor mill surrounding a third season of HBO's hit drama True Detective continues to brew. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak.
