  • Report: Cowboys WR Lucky Whitehead Arrested For Shoplifting

Receiver Lucky Whitehead, cut by the Cowboys after reports surfaced that he was arrested for petty theft and had a warrant out for failure to appear, was exonerated by police in Virginia. After being charged with the offense, Whitehead failed to show for his arraignment on July 6.

Instead, the incident was a case of mistaken identity, as Whitehead's agent, Dave Rich, had said on Monday. Prince William police said it "regrets the impact these events had on Mr Whitehead and his family".

The Prince William County Police Department in Virginia issued a statement today in which they said Whitehead was misidentified as the culprit.

On July 6th, the alleged instance of missing the court was due to Whitehead never receiving a summons.

"We evaluate the situation and how it was handled by the player after the incident and we evaluate the body of work", coach Jason Garrett said.

Football star Lucky, aka Rodney Darnell Whitehead, was charged with shoplifting under $200 worth of goods after cops were called to the WAWA by an employee who said a man ran out of the store without paying.

The Cowboys have not made a statement regarding the Whitehead update. ESPN's Josina Anderson said a Cowboys source had told her Whitehead's release would stand, and was due to an effort "to improve the roster from an ability and team culture standpoint".

Rapoport reported that he reviewed Whitehead's flight records from the day he was reportedly arrested, with Whitehead flying out of Dulles International Airport in Washington to Dallas only six hours after his arrest. Dallas police have suspended their investigation because they have not been able to locate the victim, and no witnesses have come forward. "It was, 'You better have a darn good reason for this, ' and we were completely blindsided by it". The dog was eventually returned to Whitehead.

Lucky Whitehead (wearing lucky number 13) attended Dirk Nowitzki's charity baseball game earlier this year. He has rushed 20 times for 189 yards and caught nine passes for 64 yards.
