Both in a statement and a CNN interview fired White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus has continued to unrelentingly suck up to the least popular president in the history of polling.

Priebus' ouster comes one day after his long-running feud with Trump's new communications director Anthony Scaramucci spilled (graphically) into the public view - and one week after his White House ally (and former RNC spokesman) Sean Spicer resigned as Trump's press secretary. General Kelly has been a star, done an incredible job thus far, respected by everybody, a great, great, American.

The White House did not immediately provide details on Gen. Kelly's permanent replacement at the Department of Homeland Security.

"He has been a true star of my administration", tweeted Trump in announcing the move.

Priebus's departure was nearly a foregone conclusion, especially after Trump's new White House communications director, Anthony Scarmucci, called Priebus a "f***ing paranoid schizophrenic" on Thursday and alluded to him being the one leaking information to journalists.

But the appointment of the NY financier to the role of communications director had been seen as a signal to Priebus, who had reportedly sought to keep him out of a White House position.

"We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him!" he tweeted. He had hoped to stay on at least a year but struggled to manage his unpredictable boss and was unable to get a handle on conflicting factions in the White House who have frequently squabbled.

"Reince is a good man", Trump told reporters as he exited the plane onto rain-soaked tarmac.

Kelly has already been working in the Trump administration, serving as the secretary of homeland security.

"And leading up to Priebus" final days as chief of staff, Trump's complaints to other senior staff reached "fever pitch", the official said.

Scaramucci was convinced that Priebus was behind a series of high-profile leaks affecting him and Trump.

"Oh, Bill Shine is coming in", Scaramucci said to Lizza, imitating Priebus. Priebus was reportedly on the brink of being fired for much of his time in the White House, because Trump doubted his support. Kushner has described him to associates as the kind of figure he'd like to see have more say in the administration. Speculation had been rampant for weeks about the departure of Priebus.

Asked what he meant by including Priebus, Scaramucci said, "If Reince wants to explain he's not the leaker, he can do that". "I think it's healthy", he said.

Priebus has grown increasingly isolated in the White House, as past Republican National Committee colleagues and other allies have left or been pushed out of the West Wing. On Thursday evening, The New Yorker posted an interview with Mr Scaramucci that included a profanity-laced tirade against Mr Priebus. "We didn't even know it".
