  • Transgender Service Members Walk MTV VMAs Red Carpet as Trump Moves Forward with Military Ban

President Trump announced the change in policy in a series of tweets in July, stating that the "United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the us military". The document formalizes the discriminatory ban that Trump unexpectedly announced in a series of tweets last month, turning a pointless, bigoted idea into official United States policy. The second lawsuit was filed in Seattle federal court by Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN.

"Two weeks ago, NCLR filed a lawsuit with GLAD that has the power to stop Trump's transgender military ban". This order reverses that course, and we strongly urge President Trump to do the right thing by allowing transgender people to serve in the USA armed forces.

"The Trump Administration has provided no evidence that this pronouncement was based on any analysis of the actual cost and disruption allegedly caused by allowing men and women who are transgender to serve openly", the suit states.

On Aug. 9, five transgender service members filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington D.C. asking a judge to block Trump from issuing a ban.

The organization also cites a 2016 report by the RAND Corp. commissioned by the Department of Defense that found the health care costs for transgender service members represent "an exceedingly small proportion" of Pentagon health care expenditures. The plaintiffs include Staff Sgt. Catherine Schmid, a 33-year-old woman now serving in Joint Base Lewis-McChord who has applied to become an Army warrant officer. Not only do groups like the ACLU and Lambda Legal believe Trump's trans ban to be highly discriminatory and offensive, they believe it is also unconstitutional.

The ban, the lawsuit said, violates Americans' constitutional rights and singles out these individuals based on "uninformed speculation, myths and stereotypes, moral disapproval, and a bare desire to harm this already vulnerable group". The study estimated that of those, 30 to 140 would possibly seek new hormone treatments a year into their service with 25 to 130 gender-transition surgeries among active service members. It's unknown how many of them are in Georgia, which is home to thousands of US service members and some major military installations, including Fort Benning, Fort Gordon and Fort Stewart.

She, like thousands of others, has been left in limbo after President Trump left Defence Secretary Jim Mattis to decide whether to retain existing transgender recruits.

Before the policy change by the Obama administration, the Pentagon had concluded that there was no basis for the military to exclude transgender people, as long as they could meet the same fitness requirements as other service members.
