Australian cricket pay war finally over

  • Cricket Australia, players' union end pay dispute; Bangladesh series on

On Thursday, Australian skipper Steve Smith sent out a series of tweets acknowledging the Australia Cricketers' Association's efforts which finally paid off as the long-running pay dispute with Cricket Australia came to an end.

CA CEO James Sutherland and his ACA counterpart Alistair Nicholson are expected to announce the completion of a Heads of Agreement document.

Cricket Australia produces a memorandum of understanding with the players - represented by the ACA - every five years.

However, it has been confirmed that the players will receive back-pay once the brand new MoU is completed and signed.

However, Steve Smith is now to lead his team to Dhaka on August 18, with a one-day tour to India next month and October and the showpiece home Ashes series against England, beginning in November, also now safe.

The most divisive issue in the dispute involved revenue sharing.

CA's push to dismantle the player payment system, which had been in place for 20 years, was the main sticking point in negotiations.

"The ACA is delighted for the men and women who play the game now and in the future", ACA president Greg Dyer said in a statement. Australia will also take on India in a limited overs series before going up against England in a highly-anticipated Ashes series on home soil in November.

The report seems to suggest good times ahead for the global economy, with risks to growth in the medium term remaining low. Nigeria's economy dropped into recession in 2016, with the economy contracting by 1.6 percent.

The bad-tempered dispute "has been rumbling for months, rattling the game and badly straining the players' relationship with the governing body", says The Times.

"I pay tribute to all of the players for their resolve".

"In announcing this agreement, we're restoring certainty, and beginning to fix relationships, especially with the fans".

"The revenue sharing model in which the players will share up to 30 percent of agreed revenue consisting of 27.5 percent of forecast revenue streams and a 2.5 percent performance pool".

But after months of bad-tempered negotiations over a new pay deal - and a player boycott of an Australia A tour to South Africa - the end appears to be in sight.

The relationship between administrators and players in Australia hasn't been as strained since the World Series Cricket revolution 40 years ago.

Under CA's proposal, only male global players would have had the chance to share in any surplus revenue, while other domestic male players and women at both domestic and worldwide level would have had to settle for fixed amounts which would have not fluctuated according to the game's income.

"We want the focus to be back on the cricket". "I think we've reached a good compromise, one that we can both live with and one that will be good for the game and good for Australia's cricketers".
