Federal scientists contradict Trump on climate change

Worldwide, the draft report finds it "extremely likely" that more than half of the global mean temperature increase since 1951 can be linked to human influence. The report also notes that small temperature changes have big impacts on climate.

The most recent federal report on climate change in Canada appears to be a Natural Resources Canada report from 2014.

Like the delay in publishing the draft report, the emergence of the emails has stoked fears the Trump administration is attempting to censor the climate change debate in favour of promoting the exploitation of America's fossil fuel reserves. Last year, he said he thinks "there is some connectivity" between human activity and climate change. Extreme cold waves have become less common globally, while extreme heat waves have been more common.

Scientists from more than a dozen federal agencies fear the damning document, which was obtained by the New York Times, will never see the light of day. (Whenever the Trump team uses "hoax", understand we are dealing with an unassailable set of facts it desperately wants to deny.) For now, the White House is stalling, declining to comment until the report is finalized and officially released.

If human activity does not change dramatically, the study predicts increases of 5.0-7.5 degrees Fahrenheit by the late 21st century.

The United States officially informed the United Nations on Friday that it would pull out of the 2015 Paris climate deal two months after President Trump announced his decision to do so. It takes note of thousands of scientific studies, and particularly focuses on the rapid rise in USA average temperatures since 1980. Increases in the United States are expected to spike by 5 degrees by century's end with lower emissions, and by nearly 9 degrees with higher emissions, making parts of the country potentially unlivable outside of climate-controlled environments.

A preliminary draft of the new report was distributed for review last December and available on the website of the National Academy of Sciences, which has already approved it. Temperatures in Alaska (and the Arctic) have risen twice as fast as the global average in the past 50 years; permafrost is thawing; and glaciers have lost ice.

The United States just announced Friday it would still take part in worldwide climate change negotiations in order to protect its interests, despite its planned withdrawal from the Paris accord on global warming. Average sea levels around the world have risen by about seven to eight inches since the beginning of the 20th century, with about three of those inches occurring since 1993. It's true the United States was working toward zero emissions at a quicker rate than countries like China, but the US also has much more infrastructure already in place to aid in achieving that goal.

The Internet Archive, a website that archives content published online, says it downloaded the report from the Environmental Protection Agency's website in January 2017. It's unclear whether the administration will try to suppress the report, but the scientific community is watching.

As for the Paris Climate Accord, 196 different countries agreed to adopt green energy sources, cut down on emissions and limit the spike in global temperatures.
