Google And Walmart Announce A Partnership To Take On Amazon

24 August, 2017, 02:31 | Author: Jan Cross
  • You'll soon be able to buy Walmart products on your Google Home

This will enable us to deliver highly personalized shopping recommendations based on customers' previous purchases, including those made in Walmart stores and on Walmart.com.

Google also had its say, in a blog post welcoming Walmart this morning and pointing out the time-saving convenience of getting "what you want, however you want, from the stores where you already shop", as Sridhar Ramaswamy, SVP ads and commerce, puts it. That company's shift towards wider food-based deliveries with the bid for Whole Foods, coupled with its current dominance in the AI speaker market with the Amazon Echo, has kicked its rivals into action - in the shape of a Google-Walmart delivery machine.

United States retail giant Walmart is partnering with Google in order to offer customers the opportunity to buy its products through voice-activated devices.

"When it comes to voice shopping, we want to make it as easy as possible for our customers", Lore wrote in the post.

"It makes sense for us to team up with Google".

While that continues to be speculative, what is nearly certain is that voice shopping is here big time, and artificial intelligence too will have a big role to play in that.

"Voice shopping is becoming a more important part of everyday shopping behavior", said Marc Lore, CEO of Walmart's USA e-commerce business.

By partnering with Google, Walmart will be able to compete in the digital segment with Amazon.

The offer builds on Walmart's move in late January that replaced a pilot program offering free shipping but that came with an annual fee of $49, with one with a lower free-shipping threshold, faster delivery and no membership fee. About 71 percent will use Echo devices, with the Google Home speaker trailing at 24 percent. Google made one other announcement related to all this.

Walmart and Google are putting their best features forward to take on Amazon together in the voice-activated shopping area.

Amazon's goal is to open 2,000 grocery stores within the upcoming decade, and 20 in the next two years, according to Business Insider. Partnering up with Google gives them missing pieces that Amazon already has in their arsenal. The discounter will integrating its Easy Reorder feature, which has data on customers' store and online purchases, into Google Express.

The partnership will continue to expand in 2018 when Walmart leverages 4,700 stores and its fulfillment network to create voice-activated BOPIS options and voice shopping for fresh groceries.

Above all, Walmart has been taking aggressive steps like offering hefty discounts, free shipping or more to reach an array of customers through online retailing.
