  • Philippines to host international summit with focus on security

But late Sunday Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and told the Foreign Minister the US has not yet even decided how it will respond, according to the AP.

Sales of oil, natural gas, and other raw materials around the world are primarily conducted in USA dollars, and the sanctions hit particularly hard at Russia's energy sector.

This led to Congress passing fresh US sanctions against Russian Federation last month that has led to Moscow moving to expel hundreds of USA diplomats and seize two USA facilities in Russian Federation. The legislation, which had a veto-proof majority in Congress, slaps new sanctions against Russian Federation while also limiting the president's ability to lessen those sanctions.

During their first bilateral talks in Manila, Kono and Lavrov also confirmed that the two countries will hold a vice foreign ministerial meeting on August 17 in Moscow to discuss such activities, the Japanese official said.

"We felt the readiness of our USA colleagues to continue dialogue".

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said that the United States are willing to work with Russian Federation and it is pointless to cut off the ties over their disagreements.

He also expects to have discussions on additional topics concerning "threats to all of us and our common response to that" as well as "opportunities that exist among all of those to strengthen relationships".

UN Security Council unanimously adopts new sanctions on N. Korea
Security Council has unanimously approved new sanctions on North Korea including banning exports worth over $1 billion. While the draft resolution would impose biting economic sanctions, the USA didn't get everything it wanted.

"We provided an explanation", Lavrov said, referring to Russia's decision to take over a summer-house compound in Moscow leased by the USA embassy and an order to slash USA diplomatic presence in Russian Federation.

In addition to discussing issues with North Korea and cooperation on cybercrime, Lavrov said Moscow and Washington's envoys were set to discuss Ukraine.

Trump also lashed out at lawmakers for endorsing the sanctions measure while blaming Congress for fostering a tense relationship with Moscow.

Tillerson made the comments in a meeting with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov saying he sees Moscow's relations pragmatically and believed problems could be addressed.

The Syrian cease-fire reflected a return of U.S. -Russia cooperation to lower violence there. A U.S. Justice Department investigation is moving ahead into Russia's election interference and potential Trump campaign collusion. During a photo-op before their meeting, Tillerson and Lavrov shared smiles and some pleasantries, but both ignored a question on how the new sanctions will impact their talks.

Lavrov invited Kono, who assumed his post last week in a Cabinet reshuffle, to Russian Federation, the official said.

Word that U.S. special representative Kurt Volker plans to visit the Russian capital was the latest sign that Washington is giving fresh attention to resolving the Ukraine conflict.
