Trump Returns to Arizona Amid Political Chaos

  • Then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was joined by Joe Arpaio the sheriff of metro Phoenix at a news conference in Marshalltown Iowa in January 2016. Last week Trump told Fox News he may grant a pardon to the former sheriff following

President Trump is set to hold a campaign-style rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, despite opposition from Democrat lawmakers in Arizona.

Gutierrez said the party is hoping they don't hear a message similar to what Trump delivered in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

JUNG: Castro is talking about Joe Arpaio, the former Maricopa County sheriff who was recently convicted of criminal contempt of court for ignoring a federal judge's order to stop traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.

As thousands of Trump supporters and protesters are expected to flood downtown Phoenix, local residents have showed their worries to an uproar triggered by the president.

Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, was planning to greet Mr. Trump but not to attend the rally, according to the Arizona Republic.

The rally organized by the Trump campaign will also be a test of the president's support among his base and elected Arizona Republicans, some of whom won't show up because of the possible damage he can do to their own political standing.

"As mayor of the city of Phoenix, I'm expecting you to be civil, respectful and peaceful", Stanton said.

Pardoning the self-titled "America's toughest sheriff" would bolster widespread concern that Trump is more interested in protecting his allies than the people of color they harm, critics say. But, he added, "Gov. Ducey's focus has been working with law enforcement toward a safe event in downtown Phoenix for all those involved and in the area".

"To those attending the rally and outside, we want to give you every opportunity to express your First Amendment rights, no matter what your opinion happens to be", Stanton said at a news conference.

Moscow hopes Iran won't quit nuclear deal
During the U.S. presidential election Mr Trump vowed to pull out of the pact, claiming that Iran had violated the agreement. Rouhani . "It was Iran's preference, but it was not and will not remain Iran's only option", Rouhani said, as cited by AP.

The violence triggered the biggest domestic crisis for Trump, who was widely criticized for not immediately condemning white nationalists and for blaming both white nationalists and counter-protesters for the violence.

"Another interesting takeaway from this survey besides Arizonans overall thinking an Arpaio pardon is a bad idea: It will go over like a lead balloon with the 54 years of age or younger crowd", Noble also said.

Trump is scheduled to visit a Marine Corps base along the U.S. -Mexico border before flying to Phoenix for his 7 p.m. rally at the Phoenix Convention Center. "He feels revitalized when he visits because there are so many Trump supporters here in Arizona".

Lines said he doesn't know whether Trump will pardon Arpaio and won't speculate.

Authorities say they're fully prepared to handle protests surrounding President Donald Trump's rally in downtown Phoenix but stress they will have no tolerance for illegal activity.

"President Trump does not know how to be a unifier - does not know how to ease the pain of this country like we saw George Bush do after 9/11", Gallego said Monday.

But White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters during Trump's flight that he would take no action Tuesday on Arpaio. Flake was slammed by the president as "toxic" on his typical early morning Twitter last Thursday.

"We want to avoid safety issues should protests occur", said Sara Bresnahan, spokesperson for the Phoenix elementary school district.

Gallego is anxious that Trump will go through with it because "he knows the white nationalists are really pissed off because he just fired the head white nationalist in Steve Bannon".
