World's oldest man and Auschwitz survivor, Yisrael Kristal, dies aged 113

Yisrael Kristal passed away in his hometown of Haifa, according to Guinness World Records.

Israel Kristal was orphaned shortly after the end of the First World War and moved to Lodz, Poland to work in his family's confectionary business.

Kristal is survived by many relatives.


The World Jewish Congress, an global federation of Jewish communities, honored his death on Twitter, writing: "Holocaust survivor Yisrael Kristal was the oldest man in the world".

According to the news site Ynet, Mr. Kristal leaves two children, nine grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Kristal was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was near-death and weighed about 82 pounds by the camp's liberation in 1945.

Kristal married again after the war and moved to Israel in 1950. There, he opened another sweet shop and continued to run the business up until his retirement. Yisrael Krista died when he was just one month shy of his 114th birthday. He turned 13 in 1916, but - although he was frum then and has remained frum his entire life - with World War I raging, there were no facilities or opportunities for Kristal to have a Bar Mitzvah celebration.

Kristal's daughter told the New York Times her father had prayed every morning for the past 100 years.

Yisrael Kristal, a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp and recognized a year ago by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living man, died in Israel on Friday.

"I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why", Kristal said.
