A small group of USA troops carrying out a missile-defense mission in Israel is taking up residence inside a new barracks building on an Israeli base in an effort to improve living conditions for troops.

The air defense chief said the permanent presence of a USA facility on Israeli soil sends a "message to the region and our surroundings that our partnership with our friend the United States is important".

"As we understand, it was on a reconnaissance mission along the border and the Golan Heights on behalf of Hezbollah", an Israeli military spokesman, Jonathan Conricus, told reporters.

"The minute that the U.S. decides to procure Iron Dome, we will transfer all the knowledge and production file to Raytheon", Yosi Druker, head of Rafael's Air Superiority Systems division was quoted by Defense News as saying, adding that the system would be fully produced in the United States.

Israeli army sources said that cooperation between the Israeli Air Force and the US Army has been routine.

The Israeli brigadier general also told reporters the establishment of a permanent U.S. base in Israel "allows us to improve our defense, in discovery and in interception and in preparedness". The general stressed that the American presence would not hamper the IDF's ability to act independently against any threat to the security of the state of Israel.

The message was passed along to the IDF, which quickly changed all mentions on its website of a "US military base" to read "US military facility".

"In February the US and Israeli militaries will participate in the biannual Juniper Cobra exercise".

"The United States and Israel have long planned together, exercised together and trained together". There are conflicting reports regarding which military specifically will retain jurisdiction over the base.

Haimovich also noted that the IDF had established a new Iron Dome battalion, referring to the battle proven Israeli air defense battery that has gained a reputation for successfully countering the threat of short range rockets.

Israel's air defenses now include the Iron Dome, created to shoot down short-range rockets, and the Arrow system which intercepts ballistic missiles outside of the Earth's atmosphere. He added it would allow for an improvement in interception operations.
