Around 400 people are reported to have died in communal violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state that started on August 25 after Rohingya insurgents attacked police posts.

The plight of the ethnic minority group has drawn global criticism, most notably for national leader and Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Thousands of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and other local ethnic groups have also been displaced. It said the locations match some of the accounts given by people who have fled into Bangladesh of settlements that have been attacked and destroyed by Myanmar soldiers, police and armed civilians.

The rag-tag unit has a real fight on its hands against Myanmar's well-equipped army, which has been offered military assistance from Bangladesh to root out rebels near the border.

The Rohingya are quite simply one of the most helpless and forsaken peoples of the world.

The Naf river is narrow in some places, but the Rohingya are increasingly crossing where the river is wider, or even venturing out to sea, after Bangladeshi authorities intensified border patrols.

"Many children have been killed", he told BuzzFeed News from Geneva, "many women, many elderly".

Most live in squalid and increasingly overcrowded camps in the coastal area of Cox's Bazar, and Dhaka has made clear it wants no more to come.

Both sides accuse the other of atrocities as tens of thousands of Rohingya flee to Bangladesh.

From Bangladesh, many Rohingya have crossed a porous border into Hindu-majority India, where they are starting to be vilified by some right-wing groups. Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees are believed to be stuck at the border to Bangladesh.

"As of 31 August, 38,000 people are estimated to have crossed the border into Bangladesh", the officials said on Friday, in their latest estimate.

"As Burmese security forces act to prevent further violence, they have a responsibility to adhere to global humanitarian law, which includes refraining from attacking innocent civilians and humanitarian workers and ensuring assistance reaches those in need", Haley said.

The MEA, on Friday, said the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway project is on track and also hoped that the Kaladan transport project in which India is a participant would boost the economy of Myanmar.

The military has killed 370 Rohingya from the Muslim minority.

The fighting is a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered since October, when similar but much smaller Rohingya attacks on security posts prompted a brutal military response dogged by allegations of rights abuses. The affliction of statelessness in an era of the modern nation-states means that the Rohingya are barred from the privilege of state education and are often the target of violence.
