In a statement released through CNN, US Marine Corps Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway revealed that the Kurdish troops that are being backed up by the US military surrendered an American citizen who is fighting for the global terrorist group on or before Tuesday, Sept. 12. He was taken into custody during a battle in the Deir-al-Zour region, which the Daily Beast first reported.

An ISIS convoy that had been stranded in the Syrian desert for two weeks reached militant-held territory in eastern Syria on Wednesday after a USA -led coalition stopped airstrikes on its route following a request from Russian Federation. "The U.S. citizen is being legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant".

Col. Ryan Dillon, the spokesman for the coalition in Iraq and Syria, could not confirm the buses reached their final destination and said the coalition had not had persistent surveillance on them for days.

Heather Nauert, spokeswoman for the State Department, told reporters earlier Thursday that anyone who goes to fight for ISIS "can't be very bright".

'The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and we will pursue ISIS fighters regardless of nationality'.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the American had surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a USA -backed alliance of mostly Arab and Kurdish fighters.

On the campaign trail, Trump indicated he was open to detaining USA citizens at Guantánamo Bay and trying them at the military commissions there.

But the fighter captured this week is the first American captured since President Trump took office, presenting a test of how Trump will handle USA citizens suspected of terrorism overseas.

Khweis had surrendered to Kurdish forces in March 2016.

The alliance has taken part in the US -backed air and ground offensive aimed at forcing Islamic State militants out of Raqqah, the group's self-declared capital in Syria.
