The Army killed a Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Abdul Qayoom Najar, while he was trying to infiltrate into the Kashmir Valley from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Tuesday morning.

"He would not even trust his wife, his brother, not even his deputy or seniors", Imtiyaz Hussain, senior superintendent of police Baramulla, who is believed to be one of the top most officers of Jammu and Kashmir Police battling insurgency in Kashmir for years, said.

In the summer of 2015, Najar had formed Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) outfit after differences cropped up between Hizbul commanders in PoK and him.

He said Najar's return to take reins of HM in the Valley was necessitated after killing of top commanders of the outfit in north and south Kashmir in forces operations. Najar was also reportedly unhappy as the Hizb high command had shifted focus to cadres operating in Tral instead of his cadres operating in north Kashmir.

He said Najar briefly fell out with HM/Hurriyat leadership in 2015 when he orchestrated multiple attacks on mobile towers in Sopore.

Uri, Syeed Javid Ahmad, confirmed to Kashmir Reader that the search operation is still on for the other militants who may have infiltrated along with Najar.

He said Najar was an IED expert and involved in many IED blasts in Kashmir. "He was responsible for killing several policemen and civilians", deputy inspector general of police Nitish Kumar said.

ANI later reported that the dead militant has been identified as Abdul Qayoom Najar. After his release, Qayoom allegedly reentered militancy and was an active terrorist.

His splinter group had also killed six individuals on accusations of working as informers for security agencies, which included former militants and members of Geelani's group. So, had this gentleman made entry into north Kashmir, it would have been a problem for us. Neutralising him would have been very hard as he was already heading a huge network in Sopore, Palhallan, Pattan, Handwara areas of Bandipora and Baramulla. Baramulla SSP Imtiaz Hussain termed it a significant achievement for the forces as the 44-year-old had been an active militant for 18 years.
