U.S. President Donald Trump temporarily lifted restrictions on foreign shipping from the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico on Thursday to help get supplies quickly to the U.S. territory as it reels from the devastation of Hurricane Maria. She says Trump is responding to a request from the governor, and it "will go into effect immediately".

Republicans and Democrats had urged Trump to waive a little-known federal law called the Jones Act that prohibits foreign-flagged ships from shuttling goods between USA ports. The lack of electricity has also hugely impacted Puerto Rico's clean water supply, and many areas now have no/very limited access.

Relatives helped Maribel Valentin Espino find shelter when Hurricane Maria roared through her community in northern Puerto Rico.

"Any organization collecting donations can bring them here to the warehouse at the corner of Washington and Lake Shore Drive and we will make sure they get on the truck", he said. Kaitlyn Lahm, spokesperson for Samaritan's Purse, said the plane landed on Sunday with supplies for 6,000 families and returned with more supplies to reach another 1,500 households yesterday.

Third-year College student Victor Rodriguez was born and raised in Puerto Rico and said he has been personally affected by the destruction from Hurricane Maria.

She didn't have any respiratory issues before the hurricane, Alicea says, sitting on a blue bench outside San Jorge Children's Hospital in San Juan.

The storm claimed more than 30 lives across the Caribbean, including at least 16 in Puerto Rico.

In the wake of the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz - along with other United States politicians, including McCain and Marco Rubio, R-Florida - had urged the suspension of the Jones Act in order to speed up supply deliveries. "Our main focus right now is raising as much money as we can because our people are at risk".

The waiver, which will be in force for 10 days and will cover all products shipped to Puerto Rico, was signed on Thursday morning by acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke, the DHS said in a statement.

In the meantime, the administration still has $5 billion in aid in a disaster relief fund, and Congress has also approved about $7 billion more that will become available on October 1.

Ramos said most people she encounters on campus have little idea of how bad the ongoing situation is.

The state is also willing to lend heavy equipment to Puerto Rico to help with recovery operations.

"I would like to see the fire and fury of this administration when it comes to a rescue effort", said Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in a tweet, noted that the administration "has finally waived" the Jones Act.
