  • President Donald Trump listens during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Palace Hotel during the United Nations General Assembly Thursday Sept. 21 2017 in New York

But later after arriving at his hotel outside United Nations headquarters, Ri said Trump's speech did not surprise members of the Kim Jong Un regime. Trump tweeted Friday that Kim was "obviously a madman" who would be "tested like never before".

'I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged United States dotard with fire, ' Kim said in the rare direct statement, referring to Trump.

According to Merriam-Webster, a "dotard" is a "person in his or her dotage", with "dotage" further defined as "a state or period of senile decay marked by decline of mental poise and alertness".

The United Nations Security Council had also condemned the recent launch of another ballistic missile by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and called on the country's leadership to halt such activities and explore resumption of honest dialogue on de-nuclearisation.

China's foreign minister Wang Yi called on North Korea not to go further in a "dangerous direction" with its nuclear program and said negotiation was the only way out of the crisis over Pyongyang's weapons development, calling on all parties to help ease tensions.

The pair were at odds over President Trump's speech at the United Nations General Assembly, in which he threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to do so in defence of the USA or its allies.

Seoul's Unification Ministry, which is responsible for North-South relations, said it was the first time a North Korean leader had addressed the world with such a direct statement.

Here's the key line in Kim's argument: "His (Trump's) remarks which described the USA option through straightforward expression of his will have convinced me, rather than frightening or stopping me, that the path I chose is correct and that it is the one I have to follow to the last".

At the United Nations, Trump called Kim "rocket man" and threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea.

"The Kospi today is mostly influenced by a dip in Wall Street overnight rather than what is going on with North Korea issues", said Kim Sung Hwan, an analyst at Bookook Securities.

North Korea has launched dozens of missiles under Kim Jong Un's leadership as it accelerates a weapons program created to give it the ability to target the United States with a powerful, nuclear-tipped missile.

A senior USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Washington was taking Kim's threat seriously and added that any atmospheric test would be a "game-changer".

South Korea's presidential office said in a statement that a handful of its government agencies "still maintain [the quake] was natural and not from an explosion".

Trump asserted that North Korea's reckless pursuit of nuclear weapons threatens entire world with enormous loss of human life.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in Thursday, two important U.S. allies on North Korea's doorstop.

Pyongyang is the capital city of North Korea.

Mr Wang told the United Nations on Thursday that there should be no new nuclear weapons on the Korean peninsula "whether it is in the North or the South".

The US President told supporters America "really has no choice" but to confront the Pyongyang regime over its nuclear weapon ambitions.

North Korea has previously embraced racist, sexist and just plain rude statements about its enemies.
