Established in 1923, Interpol is the world's largest police organization and now has 192 members after the admission of Solomon Islands and the State of Palestine on Wednesday.

And yet, ignoring Israel's widely recognized expertise in combatting terrorism, 75.7% of voting countries supported the resolution, which grants the Palestinians access to Interpol's secure global police communications network, and other perks of full-fledged members.

"We continue to struggle", the statement said, highlighting Israel's attempts to block membership for Palestine.

The decision to accept PA membership in Interpol comes at a time when the PA is under pressure from ex-Palestinian inmates who were illegally imprisoned and tortured for working with Israel to prevent terror attacks, and are now suing the PA in Israeli courts.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry, which opposed membership of Palestine, demanded that vote be postponed for at least one year.

"On this joyous occasion, the State of Palestine reiterates its commitment to upholding its obligations and contributing to fighting crime and furthering the rule of law", Maliki said.

Israel's Deputy Minister for Diplomacy, Michael Oren, criticised the vote, writing on Twitter: "By admitting "Palestine", which praises terrorists of the past and refuses to condemn those of today, Interpol makes the world less safe".

The Israeli government did not immediately comment on the vote.

PA Deputy Foreign Minister Tayseer Jaradat on Monday told The Jerusalem Post that Israel's opposition to the Palestinians joining Interpol is "unreasonable". "To try to use worldwide organizations to advance the cause only sets back that opportunity". The organization allows member countries to issue warrants for the arrest of suspects in cases where they flee to global destinations.

A majority of more than two-thirds of the yes-or-no votes was needed to pass, and upon the count the one-country one-vote basis passed that threshold easily.
