Iran tests multi-warhead ballistic missile

On Friday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed that Iran would boost its ballistic missile capabilities despite United States criticism.

"We will strengthen our defense and military capabilities. whether you want it or not", Rouhani said, a direct response to Trump's speech at the U.N. General Assembly this week.

Rouhani called Trump's "ignorant, absurd and hateful rhetoric" about Iran unfit to be heard at the United Nations.

"It is also a means to test our reactions as well as new proof of Iran's ambition to become a world power in order to threaten the countries of the Middle East and democratic states around the world".

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force, said the missile can carry multiple warheads.

Trump has singled out the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), popularly called the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal, for disdain, and has repeatedly flirted with voiding the landmark agreement.

Trump has denounced Iran as a "rogue regime" and said its government was bent on "death and destruction".

The Iranian president also reaffirmed his country's commitment to the nuclear deal.

The Iranian president said the military power is exclusively aimed at defending the country and the region against aggressors and terrorists, stressing that no one can stop Tehran from developing its conventional armaments.

Though Iran has long boasted of having missiles in the same range in its arsenal, it was the first time that the Khorramshahr missile was displayed in public.

Washington has imposed unilateral sanctions against Iran, saying Tehran's ballistic missile tests violated a United Nations resolution that endorsed the nuclear deal and called on Tehran not to undertake activities related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

Iran maintains that testing non-nuclear ballistic missiles is not a violation of the JCPOA. Following the test, the USA called for an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting, which was held on January 31, to discuss the matter.

Reports say the new missile has a range of 1,200 miles and could carry several warheads.

Criticism by the Trump administration of the 2015 nuclear deal has focused heavily on Tehran's continuing missile program.
