NATO Stands Against Nuclear Weapon Prohibition, Seeks to Remain Nuclear Alliance

Onyeama added that Nigeria was one of the main movers of the treaty, even as he said it was just unfortunate that countries who have nuclear weapons view them as deterance and believe they safeguard their security.

The treaty, which would ban the developing, stocking and threat of use of nuclear weapons, will apply only to signatory States.

Scores of police were soon on the scene but did not appear to be intent on brining the protest to a quick end.

The treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons was adopted by 122 countries at the United Nations in July following negotiations led by Austria, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and New Zealand.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons opens for signatures on Wednesday at the U.N. General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting in NY.

The decision to sign the treaty shows Nepal's commitment towards the achievement of a world free from the threat posed by nuclear weapons, the spokesperson said.

"So, ever since that period, we've always been very much a strong advocate for de-nuclearization of the world", Onyeama said.

THE majority of standard travel insurance policies won't cover you for flight cancellations and other costs. If you are affected you should have received an email, otherwise your flight should remain unchanged.

The treaty is slated to take effect 90 days after at least 50 nations have ratified it.

It came alongside the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting of world leaders.

Supporters of the pact, however, say the time has come for the global community to push harder toward eliminating atomic weapons as a 50-year-old Non-Proliferation Treaty has effectively failed to contain the thirst of powers for expanding their nuclear arsenal. Nuclear powers are also the only United Nations members with permanent Security Council veto power.

However, nuclear-armed States and most of their allies stayed out of the negotiations.

Brazilian President Michel Temer was first to sign at a ceremony Wednesday at the United Nations.

Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis said supporters of the treaty regretted the nuclear-armed nations' position.

Later Wednesday, Guterres was expected to brief the Security Council meeting on reforming United Nations peacekeeping - a key item on the Trump administration's agenda, which will be represented by Vice President Mike Pence. Canada began down a better path to peace in 1984, and it is high time we moved forward and called for our allies to do likewise.
