Tensions 'balancing on brink of large-scale conflict' - Putin on N. Korea crisis

The remarks came after North Korea fired a missile over Japan last week, adding to persistent tension over the Korean Peninsula.

In his published comments, Putin said the situation was "balancing on the brink of a large-scale conflict".

In an article sent to the media, President Putin said: "Russia believes that the policy of putting pressure on Pyongyang to stop its nuclear missile programme is misguided and futile".

"Provocations, pressure, and bellicose and offensive rhetoric is the road to nowhere", Putin said.

Putin said the crisis can only be solved through "direct dialogue between all concerned parties, without preconditions".

Following Tuesday's missile launch, Pyongyang said it would stage future military operations directed at the American territory of Guam, which has always been a focal point of North Korea's disdain with the U.S. and is often mentioned as a target. This "roadmap ... is created to promote the gradual easing of tensions and the creation of a mechanism for lasting peace and security", Putin wrote, per TASS.

The United States and South Korea agreed Friday to increase Seoul's missile capabilities just days after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan and threatened further launches, Seoul's Yonhap news agency reported.

The warning prompted a threat from North Korea to launch a missile strike on the US Pacific territory of Guam.

"All possible sanctions aimed at preventing North Korea from using a map of external relations for the development of missile and nuclear programs banned by the [UN] Security Council, all conceivable and even unimaginable sanctions, which have little to do directly with these areas of DPRK's [the Democratic People's Republic of Korea] activities, have already been adopted by the Security Council".

The U.S. has been talking to North Korea, and paying them extortion money, for 25 years.

Russian Federation has frequently expressed concern about North Korea's violations of UN Security Council resolution restricting its nuclear and missile activities.

Russian Federation said it wanted Pyongyang to show restraint and avoid any new provocative actions, while calling on the United States and its allies to refrain from any military escalation.
