Twitter revealed that almost 2,000 advertisements were placed on it a year ago by a Russian media group suspected of trying to interfere with the United States presidential election.

As his company cooperates with the ongoing investigation into a series of Facebook ads bought by dubious groups said to originate from Russia, Zuckerberg took the time to address his previous comments past year.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has summoned Facebook, Google, and Twitter to testify at a public hearing November 1 about Russia's use of social media to influence USA elections.

When Facebook found that about 470 accounts with Russian ties purchased advertisements, Twitter checked its own users and found that 22 Twitter accounts matched those. The company says an additional 179 Twitter accounts were linked to those 22, and accounts violating Twitter's rules were shut down.

The adverts appear to be aimed at sowing political unrest and manipulate US voters during the presidential election. RT accounts spent $274,100 on USA -targeted Twitter ads in 2016, promoting 1,823 tweets about news stories towards users who follow of mainstream media accounts.

"The presentation that the Twitter team made to the Senate Intel staff today was deeply disappointing", said Senator Mark Warner, D-Virginia. He called Twitter's response to the alleged Russian meddling "inadequate on nearly every level".

San Francisco: As the probe into Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election intensifies, Twitter announced that it has deleted over 200 fake Russian accounts and identified Russia Today of buying bought ads targeted at American users' accounts.

Technology companies including Twitter, Facebook and Google were asked by intelligence committees earlier this week to testify at a public hearing on November 1 about alleged Russian interference. "This is an ongoing process and we will continue to collaborate with investigators", Twitter said in its statement.

Ads ranged from posts promoting gun rights and the Second Amendment to others warning about what they said was the threat undocumented immigrants posed to democracy.

The House Intelligence Committee's top Democrat, Adam Schiff of California, said he hopes to arrange another meeting between panel lawmakers and Twitter officials soon. That includes new enforcement for suspicious logons and tweets, and reducing the amount of time suspect accounts remain visible.
