Any US attempt to go to war with North Korea will by regarded by Moscow as "openly hostile" towards Russia, Frants Klintsevich, the first deputy chairman of the Russian upper house's Committee on Defense and Security, said Wednesday, commenting on recent US remarks on the North Korean issue.

She is viewed as a key figure in negotiations with the US and met with a former top American diplomat unofficially this May. -North Korea dialogue through Russian Federation.

The Russian side acknowledged Pyongyang's stance and said it would work closely with the government in resolving the situation, according to KCNA. "If Russia can be successful in getting North Korea to move in a better direction, we would certainly welcome that".

"Political leaders in the South should ask the USA with one voice that military options should never be considered", he said.

Washington called the accusation "absurd" and warned Pyongyang to stop provocations.

Praising India's efforts to step up pressure on North Korea over its "dangerous and destabilising behaviour", Mr Mattis added: 'We maintain the capability to deter North Korea's most risky threats but also to back up our diplomats in a manner that keeps this as long as possible in the diplomatic realm'.
