  • Iraq Set To Impose Flight Ban On Kurdistan In Row Over Independence

Even the USA asked the Kurds to cancel the vote, which ended up producing a 93 percent "yes" result in favor of separating from Iraq out of a population of 3 million.

Meanwhile, Mr Yildirim said he wants to hold a summit with Iranian and Iraqi leaders to coordinate how to respond to the controversial Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum.

The Turkish and Iranian militaries have also participated in joint exercises near their borders with the Kurdistan region in recent days.

The Iranian and Iraqi armies will hold joint drills at several crossings on Iran's border with the autonomous Iraqi region of Kurdistan, according to officials.

Turkey, which has threatened to impose sanctions on the Kurds, said its border with northern Iraq remained open, although it may not remain so.

Military tensions are running high; after the vote, the Iraqi parliament asked Abadi to send troops to Kirkuk, a disputed oil-rich city under KRG control that is only 50% Kurdish. The United Nations Security Council had warned Kurdish authorities against holding the plebiscite.

The US does not recognize the legitimacy of the unilateral independence referendum staged by the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, US State Secretary Rex Tillerson has said in a statement.

Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey all have sizable Kurdish populations and have had to deal for years with Kurdish restiveness and calls for autonomy.

For all this, the United States urged both Baghdad and Erbil - the Kurdish capital - "to calm down and put an end to reciprocal recriminations and threats".

Turkey fears that the creation of a kurdish State on its border does not make oil spot, so that Ankara is facing a bloody rebellion, a separatist movement in the south-east of its territory.

Iraq's prime minister had on Tuesday ordered the northern Kurdish region to hand over control of its airports to federal authorities or face a flight ban, signalling a tough response to a landmark Kurdish independence referendum held the day before.

An Iraqi government order that global airlines halt all flights in and out of the cities of Erbil and Sulaimaniyah in Kurdish territory is set to kick in on Friday.
