The LA Times reported Thursday that one day after a massive rockfall occurred on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, leaving one man dead and another injured, a second (much larger) rockfall has hit the famous climbing destination.

The pair, found with climbing equipment, are believed to have been scouting out the ascent from a trail when the granite sheet measuring about 40m (131ft) by 20m (65ft) fell shortly before 14:00 local time (21:00 BST) on Wednesday.

Yosemite remained open after Wednesday's rock fall, and other activities throughout the park were not affected, rangers said. All other people in the area have been accounted for and search efforts have been concluded.

For a period of four hours on Wednesday, a series of seven rockfalls occurred on the Southeast face of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

"It was in the same location of the previous rock fall", Sheridan told The Associated Press by cellphone from the mountain. "Well basically a natural process, Rockfall is one of those things that makes it one of the many kinds of landslides we have to be aware of to keep ourselves safe", said Jerry De Graff, Fresno State Geology Professor. There are about 80 rockfalls a year in the park, although many go unreported.

It is one of America's most popular natural wonders. But even Yosemite National Park cannot escape the drought ravaging California now in its fourth year and fueling

The Higher Cathedral Spire is right across the Merced River from El Capitan. His wife, Lucy Foster, was injured and is recovering in a Modesto hospital. "We don't see a strong link between climbing and rock falls".

"We didn't know what had happened, but it shattered [the glass] and the dust just poured in", Evans said.

Andrew Foster, 32, was killed while preparing to ascend El Capitan, a 1100m granite monolith that attracts climbers from around the world, with wife Lucy. "Let's go!' and at the same time my husband reached up and he was like 'Oh, my head, my head" because it was bleeding profusely and hurting".

The last rockfall-fatality in Yosemite happened 18 years ago when a rock climber, Peter Terbush, was killed by a rockfall from Glacier Point.

The couple was also active with the Cardiff University Mountaineering Club. During the cataclysm, the mountain climber who was on the mountain of El Caftan fell down together with piece of rock. The injured person was flown out via air ambulance to receive medical care at an area hospital.
