Iranian official says at least 30 people killed, more than 200 injured during quake on Iran-Iraq border region.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was 19 miles outside the Iraqi city of Halabja.

Across the border in Iran, state TV said several people were killed and many others injured when at least eight border villages were damaged.

Iranian provinces in the northwestern, western and central areas of the country were also impacted.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds injured after a strong natural disaster shook the Iran-Iraq border region on Sunday.

Faramarz Akbari, a local official in the Iranian border city of Ghasr-e Shirin, reported the death toll to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, according to the Associated Press.

In Iran, the quake was felt in the capital Tehran.

Like most quakes that strike the region, this one was shallow, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist with the USGS's National Earthquake Information Center.

Bam in the country's southeastern province of Kerman witnessed a strong quake in December 2003 which killed 31,000 people.

Residents of the northern Iraqi city of Erbil in the street after the quake hit.
