  • Congress to give reservation to Patidars: Hardik Patel

Hardik was supposed to formally announce PASS support to the Congress in the polls in the Rajkot rally.

However, it remains to be seen how Congress manages to fulfill its promise considering that the Supreme Court in 1992 had set a ceiling of 50% reservation for all communities. "So directly or indirectly, there will be support to Congress", he said.

While Hardik Patel refrained from lending open support for Congress in the upcoming Gujarat assembly election, he vowed to fight against BJP. The PAAS leader also claimed that the BJP was trying to "buy them off". The BJP veteran leader warned Hardik that a day will come when people of the Patidar community would teach him a lesson for "playing with their sentiments".

"We never asked for any ticket".

Importantly, Congress refrained from getting into the specifics of how it plans to implement the "special category" quota, limiting itself to saying that it has the "wisdom" to find a way out. Declaring his "direct and indirect" support to Congress, the PAAS convener said the party has assured "quota under Article 31 (C) of the Constitution which guarantees that it will be kept outside the purview of the judiciary".

Summary: If not, the first nomination papers filed with the mandate will be valid.

Speaking at a media briefing, the union minister said, "The Congress-Hardik club is one of mutual deception".

Though he did not specifically ask the Patidars to vote the Congress, Patel did say that since the main opposition party is talking about the rights of the community, it should be left to the people to chose who to cast their votes for. "The law of the land is very clear and that is laid down by the Supreme Court and only last week in the Rajasthan case it has been re-affirmed that the 50 per cent cap can not be increased".

The PAAS has been agitating against the government for more than two years over the issue of reservation for the Patidar community and has pledged to oppose the ruling BJP in the coming state assembly elections in December.
