Sessions defends himself to Congress, says he never lied

  • Under fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be pressed Tuesday in a House Judiciary Committee hearing over what he knew about contacts between the Trump election campaign last year and Russia

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday that he has "always told the truth" in describing his knowledge of Trump campaign contacts with Russians - though he acknowledged he now recalls an interaction with a lower-level Trump adviser who has said he told Sessions about contacts who could help arrange a meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During that hearing, Democratic Senator Al Franken asked Sessions whether "surrogates from the Trump campaign had communications with the Russians".

Rep. Karen Bass, a Los Angeles Democrat, pressed Sessions on the report during an oversight hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, explaining that activists are concerned they'll be unfairly labeled for protesting.

"I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath. That is a lie".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday denied that he misled legislators when he previously failed to disclose a meeting he attended with then-candidate Donald Trump and aides where campaign connections to Russian Federation were discussed.

He's expected to face an onslaught of lawmakers' questions about how much he knew of that outreach during last year's White House campaign.

"As for Mr. Page, while I do not challenge his recollection, I have no memory of his presence at a dinner at the Capitol Hill Club or any passing conversation he may have had with me as he left", Sessions said. Papadopoulos recently pled guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his communications with foreign nationals.

"I am determined that when the years go by that people will say this Department of Justice would not crumble, it stayed great and true", he added.

Clinton also personally authorized the illicit efforts of felon Bob Creamer and organizer Scott Foval who fomented violence at Trump campaign rallies, as James O'Keefe's Project Veritas group revealed in undercover videos.

The Kremlin denies that and Trump says there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian officials. We traveled all the time, sometimes to several places in one day. "Sleep was in short supply", he said. "And I was still a full-time senator keeping a very full schedule during this time".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is entertaining the idea of appointing a second special counsel to investigate a host of Republican concerns - including alleged wrongdoing by the Clinton Foundation and the controversial sale of a uranium company to Russian Federation - and has directed senior federal prosecutors to explore at least some of the matters and report back to him and his top deputy, according to a letter obtained by The Washington Post.

Sessions said although his Justice Department will consider investigations into Hillary Clinton, he could not say whether he would recuse himself from the matter, contradicting his previous statements on the matter.
