Sixteen killed after boat capsizes in Vijayawada

The ill-fated boat was being operated by a private company and was said to be on a trial run. Swimmers and local fishermen rescued 15 passengers as the boat capsized.

National Disaster Response Force personnel were pressed into service to launch rescue operations, but these were hampered with the sunset.

Police in the city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh state said they recovered at least 16 bodies from Krishna River where the accident took place.

This incident comes after 22 people died after a boat capsized on Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat.

The boat was proceeding from Bhavani Islands to Pavithra Sanghamam on Sunday evening.

Most of the passengers were said to be members of the Ongole Walkers Club in Prakasam district while some were from Nellore who were on a visit to Vijayawada. As many as 20 passengers, who were wearing life jackets, managed to swim to the shore safely.

The state's tourism minister ordered an inquiry into the incident while Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences on Twitter.

NDRF top official Love Kumar and others also supervised the search operation.
