"I am shocked that my government did absolutely nothing to protect us from the elimination of TPS", Bernan Vusto, a TPS holder since 1990, said. "It is time for Congress to act and to do so before the end of the year", stated Dr. Delgado.

In a statement issued Monday night, the Department of Homeland Security said that Nicaraguans with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) have until January 5, 2019 in order to return home or seek a permanent immigration status.

However, the Trump administration said it needs more time to decide the fate of another 57,000 migrants from Honduras, another 200,000 Salvadorians, and another 50,000 Haitians.

The DHS has given the Nicaraguan migrants 14 months to leave the USA or change their immigration status. "DHS' action destroys the emotional security and compromises the mental health of thousands of USA citizen children with a lifetime of consequences for their well-being", concluded Dr. Delgado.

Temporary Protected Status is a special immigration status for people from a foreign country where the US determines that conditions in that home country prevent those people from returning safely or where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately.

For the 2,500 Nicaraguan immigrants now protected by TPS, this move will be dire as these people have built lives in the United States and their native country has a great deal of instability.

No decision has yet been made about El Salvador or Haiti.

Speaking with reporter by phone Monday night, acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke said Nicaraguans living in the US had 12 months to "seek alternative lawful immigration status" or make arrangements for their departure. While infrastructure may have been rebuilt after the destruction, the status has been reauthorized every 18 months ever since because of the violent conditions in both countries.

A supporter amongst a coalition of community leaders and immigrant advocates demonstrate outside USA immigration offices, calling on federal authorities to designate Ecuador for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for its nationals in the aftermath of last April's 7.8 magnitude quake, Wednesday June 1, 2016, in NY.

In addition, the DHS said the Nicaraguan government did not request that TPS be extended for its citizens in the United States. "They've been getting working and they have 275,000 citizen children".

After the termination of the TPS designation, individuals will revert back to whatever legal status they had before they received TPS, senior administration officials said on a background call Monday night.

"When this administration came into office they came wanting to address the issue of the undocumented immigrants".

"I'm not here to be a delinquent, to be a problem to this country", Florida resident and TPS holder Yolnick Jeune previously told ThinkProgress, explaining that after she arrived in the United States, she learned English so that she would assimilate as quickly as possible.

Although TPS is renewed on a regular basis, the administration's approach to restrict protections from deportations have made TPS-holders nervous said Portos.

Ben Cardin of Maryland and the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Monday, before the decision on Nicaragua and Honduras was announced. Nearly 200,000 Salvadorans can lose TPS status as compared to the 30,000 Salvadorans who have DACA, according to figures on the Department of Homeland Security's website.

"They think we are criminals, and the uncertainty is just so overwhelming".
