California Highway Patrol Officer Dies in Crash on Highway in Bay Area

Two officers on a routine CHP patrol on Christmas Eve were inside the vehicle at the time, authorities said.

The other officer, Jonathan Velasquez, was treated at a hospital and released.

Assistant Chief Ernest Sanchez said at at a Monday morning press conference that a speeding red Cadillac hit the back of the patrol vehicle Camilleri and Velasquez were in, reports CBS San Francisco.

"He had too much to drink and too much to smoke", Sanchez said.

CHP officials did not provide details of the injuries or the cause of the collision. He is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana and is in serious condition at a hospital.

Camilleri had been with the CHP for a year and four months. Jerry Brown, who released a statement on the officer's death on Christmas.

Camilleri had been officer for the California Highway Patrol for just over a year, Sanchez said. Camilleri, 33, died from his injuries.

Banners at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff in the fallen officer's respect, as indicated by an announcement from Gov.

"We join his family, companions and the whole California Highway Patrol in grieving his passing and in regarding his forfeit", the announcement read.

The 22-year-old driver, identified only as a Hayward resident, was hospitalized with major injuries and is expected to face felony charges, officials said.
