China caught 'RED HANDED' allowing oil to reach North Korea

  • After Trump criticism China says no illicit oil sales to NKorea

The U.S. Treasury Department placed six North Korean shipping and trading companies and 20 of their ships on sanctions list on November 21, when it published spy satellite images taken on October 19 showing a ship named Ryesonggang 1 connected to a Chinese vessel.

The U.S. Treasury released the photos showing ships from both nations trading oil illegally in the West Sea.

Ship-to-ship trade with North Korea on the high seas is forbidden in UNSC Resolution 2375 adopted in September, but such violations are almost impossible to detect unless China aggressively cracks down on smuggling.

The satellite pictures even show the names of the ships. One of them - Rye Song Gang 1, seen "connected to a Chinese vessel" - was included in the November 21 sanctions as a vessel of Korea Kumbyol Trading Company possibly transferring oil to evade sanctions.

"Caught RED HANDED - very disappointed that China is allowing oil to go into North Korea", Trump tweeted.

China accounts for the vast majority of North Korea's external trade and oil supplies.

North Korea on Sunday described the United Nations move as an "act of war" and vowed to take revenge on the USA and other Security Council members.

China is Pyongyang's main oil supplier.

President Donald Trump is attacking China following reports that Chinese ships improperly transferred oil to North Korean vessels at sea, saying there "will never be a friendly solution to the North Korea problem if this continues to happen!"

Robert Kelly, a professor of political science at South Korea's Pusan National University, told The Telegraph that the reports are plausible.

She added: "If there is solid evidence proving that there is on the Chinese side any violation of the Security Council resolutions, China will surely deal with it in accordance with laws and regulations, and not a single case of violation should get away with it". "Beijing does not police the border strictly or enforce the sanctions toughly".

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying denied that Chinese ships were found trading oil to North Korea.

Hua questioned whether any country could make sure "not a single breach will happen", but noted: "We are taking a honest and serious attitude and forceful and effective actions".
