"Tonight in the Bronx we've seen the worst fire tragedy in at least a quarter of a century, " New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter late Thursday.

Not even global warming can fend off the dangerously cold Arctic air that has settled over half of the country, and meteorologists say relief likely won't come for at least another week, The New York Times reports.

Self-closing doors, which swing shut on their own to keep fires from spreading, were also supposed to have been installed, said city Housing Preservation and Development Department spokesperson Matthew Creegan.

Four people were critically injured from the fire and were "fighting for their lives", Nigro said.

"In a department that's certainly no stranger to tragedy, we're shocked by this loss", Nigro said.

Emmanuel Mensah, a 28-year-old who immigrated from Ghana five years ago, returned to his apartment for the first time after joining the Army a year ago, according to The New York Times.

Excluding the September 11 attacks, it was the worst fire in the city since 87 people were killed at a social club fire in the Bronx in 1990.

Once the vehicle was stopped, deputies could smell what they believed to be raw marijuana, officials told the News-Times. Vrbka said the Jirons told authorities "they didn't know it was illegal to transport marijuana in Nebraska ".

Neighbor Nestor Torres said he was searching for a few people he knows in the bulding. Fire Department video released Friday showed the building's charred halls and stairs, where icicles had formed from water poured on the blaze. The fire then spread quickly, with the five story building's stairwell acting like a chimney.

About 170 firefighters worked in 15-degree weather to rescue about a dozen people from the building. "We won't tell you anything more about it other than they range in ages from 1 to over 50".

ABC 30 reported that four victims from one family have been identified as: 19-year-old Shawntay Young, 37-year-old Karen Stewart Francis, and her two daughters, 2-year-old Kylie Francis and 7-year-old Kelesha "Kelly" Francis. He added that it's not unusual for children to be fascinated by fire or rare for children to start them.

The building, with 26 apartments, has at least six open building code violations, according to city records. "God rest their souls, they're handsome".

"That's what I think, because it was in his nature", Kwabena said. By 10 p.m., the fire was under control.

Rajkumar Ramdhani, who lived with his wife on the second floor of the building, said two grandchildren were visiting from Virginia when the fire broke out. "It was horrific, heartbreaking", said Michael de Vulpillieres, a Red Cross spokesman.

One of the deadliest fires in recent city memory happened elsewhere in the Bronx in 2007. No one has been able find Mensah; his family has checked four hospitals.
