Liverpool announced the signing on Twitter as they posted a picture of Van Dijk posing with a Reds shirt standing in front of a Christmas tree at his house.

With City setting the £54 million world-record for the purchase of a defender during the summer, Liverpool till surpass this by £21 million; bringing van Dijk's fee to £75 million.

"If I could pick any two centre-halves to play in Klopp's system if it wasn't Van Dijk then it would be Alderweireld and Vertonghen", Breen told Irish radio station Newstalk.

"The Reds have agreed a deal with the south coast club, and the player himself, that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on January 1, 2018".

Liverpool did not ultimately make a formal offer to Southampton last summer but were ready to pay around £60 million after it became clear that Van Dijk wanted to join them.

A move to Liverpool will pose new challenges, especially given Klopp's preference for his team to commit its full-backs forward and leave the central defenders isolated.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to [Southampton vice-chairman] Les Reed, the board, manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton".

"Thank you for all the messages of support".

The former Celtic striker has insisted previously that he thinks the Bhoys did not earn enough when selling Van Dijk to Southampton - and now the centre-back is moving to Liverpool for £75m.

However, van Dijk's insistence on leaving - he was left out of the squad for the 5-2 Boxing Day loss to Tottenham - has forced Southampton's hand.

An official announcement from both clubs has been made with the deal to be concluded on January 1.
