In an interview with the state-run RIA news agency on Christmas Day, Lavrov said the Kremlin's diplomatic relations with North Korea make Russian Federation a suitable candidate to mediate talks between Washington and Pyongyang.

'Russia's readiness to clear the way for de-escalation is obvious, ' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a phone call with reporters, suggesting President Vladimir Putin could be called in as an unlikely peacekeeper between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump.

Lavrov's petitions for dialogue come less than a week after the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted to impose sweeping new sanctions on North Korea as outcome of its latest missile test on November 29.

Last week Russian Federation and China voted in favor of a USA -proposed measure in the U.N. Security Council to impose additional economic sanctions on North Korea as part of an escalating effort to clamp down on that country's nuclear program. North Korean officials said that the test put United States within the range of its ICBM.

He added he has also discussed key issues on the Russia-U.S. agenda with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson quite regularly, in addition to bilateral consultations held at the level of experts, and contacts between special services. Though US diplomats have said they are pursuing a diplomatic solution, President Donald Trump has said Pyongyang must commit to giving up its nuclear weapons before any talks can begin.

It said Lavrov underscored the need for "the fastest move to the negotiating process from the language of sanctions".

"We want the North Korean regime to understand that there is a different path that it can choose, however it is up to North Korea to change course and return to credible negotiations". Earlier this month, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US was ready to open talks with Pyongyang "without preconditions".

China has expressed concern about the humanitarian effects of sanctions, and has repeatedly called for constructive efforts to ease tensions.
