Soon after the clash at the top United Nations body, the White House announced that US Vice President Mike Pence was delaying a trip to the Middle East planned for this week.

The 14 other countries on the Security Council voted in favor, but US Ambassador Nikki Haley exercised the American veto.

Egypt drafted, which does not mention the United States or President Trump by name, but does refer to "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem" and calls for "reversal of the negative trends on the ground that are imperiling the two-State solution".

"The United States has the sovereignty to determine where and whether we establish an embassy", said Haley, describing the vote as an "insult" that "won't be forgotten".

Following the U.S. veto, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said Arab states, which had agreed earlier this month to seek a Security Council resolution, would meet to evaluate the situation to determine what their next steps might be.

Haley told the council "the United States has never been more committed to peace in the Middle East", and called accusations that the U.S.is setting back the prospect for peace "scandalous".

"All countries except for the Trump administration acted in unison in this vote".

The resolution did not specifically mention the USA but expressed "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem".

That resolution, which had 14 votes in favor, "reaffirmed ... that Israel's establishment of settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, had no legal validity, constituting a flagrant violation under worldwide law and a major obstacle to the vision of two States living side-by-side in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the US for using its veto in a video posted to Facebook.

US President Donald Trump revealed his new strategic plan noting that for many generations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been interpreted as the main factor preventing peace in the region. "Thank you, Nikki Haley".

Meanwhile, China has called for unity of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the global community at large over the issue of Jerusalem and for a common effort toward peace in the Middle East. No country has veto powers in the 193-nation assembly. And she insisted that this position "is fully in line with the previous Security Council resolutions". Trump also plans to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Israel took over East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and declared the whole city of Jerusalem as its eternal capital in 1980.

The resolution that was vetoed would have called on "all states to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the holy city of Jerusalem", citing a 1980 council resolution. Even the US' closest geopolitical allies - Japan, Britain, and France - voted in support of the draft.
