  • Dish DVRs will soon be working with Google Assistant

From the bathroom appliances mentioned above to an LG fridge that uses Alexa to relay recipe directions while you cook, Amazon's assistant is the one making the most in-roads when it comes to smart versions of traditional "white goods" products.

LG isn't saying much about the speaker other than it has an 8-inch touch screen and has both Google Assistant and Chromecast built-in. With IFTTT, the possibilities with TiVo go beyond just the convenience of voice controls to deeper, more relevant AI-powered tasks.

Alexa will let drivers and passengers get directions, control entertainment features, get the news and perform other functions in the vehicle via voice command, the companies said Tuesday at the CES consumer electronics conference in Las Vegas. As of now though, there is no mention yet of when these integrations will roll out. Samsung also revealed it's bringing its voice assistant, Bixby, to its smart TVs and Family Hub fridges this year. Google, which is no stranger to partnering with third-party manufacturers that use its software, is sticking to the playbook we've seen applied to its Android smartphones in the past. For the first time in several years, Google has planted the flag at CES with a large booth of its own, which GBH Insights research chief Daniel Ives attributes to the growing importance of software that can be used to manage other internet-connected devices.

Toyota announced at CES on Tuesday that Amazon's Alexa would be integrated with its infotainment systems. Analysts say some consumers find it more natural to manipulate smart devices like door locks, lightbulbs and televisions with their voice instead of smartphone apps or dedicated remotes. The proliferation of voice controls is so rampant that we already have voice-activated trash cans, which basically means that the capabilities required for this "new" communication method are already built into the latest gadgets for the home. An Amazon Echo Show is $230, so the ThinQ WK9 should be in the same category.

As CES gets underway, Amazon and Google are likely to turn up the volume on their respective business deals with electronics makers in a bid to control voice-based user interfaces. Google all but declared war on Amazon with its Google Assistant voice technology making its presence known at almost every turn on the showroom floor.

"We have over one million actions available to users that [they] can now look up", a Google spokesman told the BBC.
