Emotional Support Peacock Not Allowed to Fly on United

  • United says no to emotional support peacock

"We know that some customers require an emotional support animal to assist them through their journey", the statement said.

United told Business Insider that passengers need to "provide documentation from a medical professional and at least 48 hours advance notice" before bringing an emotional support animal onto a flight. Andrea Hiller, a spokeswoman for United, said the customer was told three times before she came to the airport that the peacock would not be able to take flight with her.

United Airlines said in a statement to NBC News that the peacock "did not meet guidelines for a number of reasons, including its weight and size".

Earlier this month, Delta Air Lines announced that passengers who want to bring service or emotional support animals aboard must show proof of vaccinations 48 hours in advance of the flight.

Airline representatives and disability support advocates met in 2016 to establish guidelines for passengers who wish to bring their therapy animals on their flights.

A video posted to The Jet Set's Facebook page showed a woman wheeling luggage with the peacock perched on her shoulder at the airport. She even offered to pay for a second seat for the bird, but was denied.

The United Airlines incident comes after Delta released a statement on January 19 announcing new requirements when it comes to emotional support animals.

Department of Transportation guidelines state that some "unusual service animals" can pose a safety or health risk and that airlines are not required to transport them, according to Hiller. Also beginning March 1, Delta will no longer allow exotic emotional support animals, including ferrets, insects, spiders, goats or animals with tusks or hooves.

United announced that they are considering a similar policy, telling Fox News that they are reevaluating their existing policy on emotional support animals. The woman was eventually asked to leave the plane, pig in tow.

Meanwhile here at home, Air Canada will only allow dogs to board as recognized emotional support or psychiatric service animals.
