Authorities are searching for surfwear company Quiksilver's CEO after his empty boat was found on a beach in France's Atlantic coast Tuesday.

Pierre Agnes CEO of Quiksilver has been declared lost at sea and huge search has been launched.

The region is known for having occasional risky waves.

His 11-metre Mascaret III speedboat was found on a beach of the French Coast.

"An air and sea search operation is underway", the Landes prefecture said in a statement, adding that two helicopters and two boats were involved in the rescue operation.

The early reports also indicate that the 54-year-old executive sent a message to the local maritime authorities explaining that he was going to postpone his return due to the fog.

Quiksilver and Billabong both started out in Australia more than 40 years ago and used surf culture to sell clothing around the world.

Agnes left Capbreton Harbor at 7.30am Tuesday and his boat was found at 9.30am.

Agnes, who joined the company almost 30 years ago, was long based at Quiksilver's European headquarters in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, just south of Biarritz.
