  • Trump administration reportedly wants to nationalize US 5G network

The Trump administration is considering a federal takeover of a portion of the nation's mobile network, according to documents obtained by Axios. The documents call for the creation of the nationwide network within three years, despite the ongoing development of a privately-held network now under construction by companies such as like Samsung, Intel, Nokia, and Huawei.

The Trump administration labored to clarify on Monday that it now has no plans to build its own ultra-fast 5G wireless network, despite publication of a memo that suggested the idea was under consideration. "Less commercial disruption" to the wireless industry is one of major "pros" of this plan, according to documents.

Yesterday Axios reported that the Trump administration was looking into building a nationwide 5G internet network.

"The wireless industry agrees that winning the race to 5G is a national priority", Meredith Attwell Baker, president and CEO of CTIA, a group that counts AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile as members, said in a statement. An unnamed source reportedly told the news outlet that the document is now outdated that that there's a newer version that's neutral regarding whether or not the federal government should construct and own the 5G network.

The technology world is waiting for the arrival of 5G to connect everything from phones and IoT devices, to self-driving vehicles and more.

According to "sensitive" documents obtained by Axios, the U.S. is looking at the possibility of building a national 5G network amid growing concerns about China.

It comes following a year in which security software firm Kaspersky has been accused of allowing itself to be compromised by Russia's security services, culminating in a presidential order to remove all Kaspersky products from federal government computers and networks.

"Unfortunately, if built using the current lnternet's unsecure architecture model, this network will also exponentially expand the threats".

The 5G network concept is aimed at addressing what officials see as China's threat to U.S. cybersecurity and economic security.

China responded to the Axios report today.

Conway told USA TODAY the legislation was meant to fend off Chinese government infiltration into US networks.

Ever since a Senate report claiming Chinese state influence over Huawei and ZTE was published in 2012, the two companies have struggled to do business in the United States and Australia.

The Axios report is based on a presentation titled "Secure 5G" and subtitled "The Eisenhower National Highway System for the Information Age".

China has denied that its companies are trying to install spyware.

Government control of 5G infrastructure would be unprecedented, since the industry is historically controlled by private operators. It is unknown at this time whether they will choose to accelerate their deployment, but at the very least we can expect an interest in deploying a secure 5G network with equipment from a trusted supply chain.
