Trump Administration Ends Temporary Immigration Status For 200000 Salvadorans

  • Telemundo Washington to Hold Community Phone Bank for TPS Cases

President Donald Trump, accompanied by Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, speaks during a meeting with Republican Senators on immigration at the White House in Washington on January 4, 2018.

"The statutory conditions supporting El Salvador's TPS designation on the basis of an environmental disaster, specifically the devastation caused by major earthquakes in 2001, no longer exist", the official said.

The announcement that the administration will end temporary protected status, or TPS, for natives of El Salvador, comes after it did the same for about 50,000 Haitians and 2,500 Nicaraguans, and hinted it may soon eliminate protections for about 57,000 Hondurans.

Immigrant rights advocates argue that it would be wrong for the U.S.to send Salvadorans back to a country with one of the worst homicide rates in the world, particularly when many have USA citizen children who could be targets for gangs if they go with their parents.

Salvadorans will have until September 2019 to leave or obtain other legal options to stay in the United States, according to the Washington Post.

She explained that El Salvador has received significant global aid and that much of the country's infrastructure is rebuilt. The Salvadorans were granted TPS after a pair of 2001 earthquakes slammed the country.

The TPS designation was offered to Salvadorans after earthquakes in 2001 left their country in shambles.

Homeland Security officials said the administration was open to Congress coming up with an amnesty allowing them to remain in the U.S. The decision was heavily criticized by immigrant advocates who said it ignored violence in El Salvador, which has one of the world's highest murder rates.

El Salvador is the fourth country whose citizens have lost Temporary Protected Status under President Donald Trump, and they have been, by far, the largest beneficiaries of the program, which provides humanitarian relief for foreigners whose countries are hit with natural disasters or other strife.

Advocates for continuing TPS for El Salvador and other countries in Central America have argued that violence and political unrest make it unsafe for migrants to return.

"Congress has a responsibility to act in the best interest of our nation by legislating a permanent solution that allows current TPS holders to contribute fully without fear of deportation", said Ali Noorani, the executive director of the National Immigration Forum.

Congressional Democrats are already moving to try to create a new pathway to citizenship for TPS holders, giving them an official way to remain in the USA permanently, as part of ongoing discussions over the fate of so-called Dreamers, another category of sympathetic illegal immigrants. Temporary in nature, the status has been extended in roughly 18-month increments by both Republican and Democratic administrations. That is more than three times the number of people in the next largest group with the status, Hondurans. There are almost 440,000 beneficiaries from the 10 countries, including 263,000 from El Salvador, but many have obtained legal status other ways. Critics say it has proved anything but temporary - with many beneficiaries staying years after the initial justification.
