  • SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket test firing goes off without a hitch

SpaceX on Wednesday test-fired its Falcon Heavy rocket for the first time in a launch pad experiment aimed at giving its main engines a trial workout before blasting off in the coming days.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted the target date on Saturday, adding that there will be plenty of viewing opportunity for the public from the nearby causeway. "Launching in a week or so". It's called the BFR, or Big Falcon Rocket, an eight stories tall, re-usable 42-engine rocket that will replace both Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles, as well as the Dragon spacecraft.

"Aiming for first flight of Falcon Heavy on Feb 6 from Apollo launchpad 39A at Cape Kennedy".

For those watching the premiere flight from the Space Coast, SpaceX's plans to return all three boosters back to Earth should produce impressive visuals. Musk, who also heads other ground-breaking companies like The Boring Company and Tesla, announced previous year that the Falcon Heavy will first take to the skies carrying a very important payload: his prototype Tesla Roadster.

The rocket fired all 27 engines for Wednesday's test. That's three times as many engines as are on SpaceX's current workhorse rocket, the Falcon 9.

Normally, that means sending a concrete mass into orbit, but Musk decided instead to send his original Tesla Roadster into an orbit around the Sun. Musk said in July that developing the new rocket has proven more challenging than expected.

This first simulation signifies that after many years, the Falcon Heavy is ready for takeoff.

The Falcon Heavy can carry one of the largest payloads in the history of space travel.

NASA's Saturn V moon rocket, used during the late 1960s and early 1970s, will still top the charts.

The company now only operates the Falcon 9 rocket, which consists of a core first stage booster and a second stage. After blasting off from NASA's historic Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, all three will attempt vertical landings, two on land and one on a floating offshore platform.
