  • Two students injured in shooting at US middle school

The determination capped a frantic day at Salvador B. Castro Middle School in downtown Los Angeles and corroborated what some students told reporters after the lockdown was lifted and they were reunited with parents on the school's athletic field.

More than 33,000 people die annually in the United States from gun-related deaths - two thirds of them suicides - according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar said a suspect - a female student - is in custody, adding that a weapon has been recovered.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and charged in juvenile court yesterday with felony counts of being a minor in possession of a firearm and having a weapon on school grounds.

A 15-year-old boy was also shot in the head, and doctors said that it doesn't appear to be life-threatening.

The male teenager was listed in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the head, according to KABC, while the female victim was in fair condition after being shot through the wrist.

Two students were hit directly by gunfire and three other victims were hit by shrapnel, police said.

News footage from shortly after the incident showed police walking a young dark-haired girl in a sweatshirt from the school in handcuffs.

"There were numerous kids that ran and other kids that may have left the classroom", Zipperman said.

Although classes resumed as normal, some students arriving at the school Friday morning said they weren't ready to come back.

"The physical evidence seems to support that it was discharged from within the backpack", LAPD Deputy Chief Robert Arcos said Friday morning.

Police said she has retained an attorney and was not answering questions.

Parents waited anxiously for several hours outside the middle school before being reunited with their children after police locked down the campus and searched classrooms. A lot of anxious parents and relatives were waiting outside the campus.

She texted that she was sitting next to two girls who were injured.

"We will attend to the needs of these students who witnessed this very carefully, with the understanding this is very traumatic", he said.

The Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles School Police and District leadership immediately responded, and we followed protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of the Castro Middle School community.

We are fully cooperating with the Los Angeles Police Department in its investigation of this matter.
