Kirk Cousins says Redskins trade for Alex Smith 'came as a surprise'

05 February, 2018, 06:11 | Author: Nora May

The Redskins are still angry that for the last two years, Cousins rejected their long-term offers - which were not very good - and they had to franchise tag him.

But compensatory picks are determined by the National Football League management council and there is no guarantee that Cousins signing with a different team would net a third-rounder, especially if the Redskins sign other free agents. The thinking: Instead of letting Cousins walk for nothing more than a compensatory pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Washington can get much more than that for what many team's consider a legit franchise quarterback.

"They couldn't afford to wait, and so they had to make a move", Cousins told ESPN. All of it. They botched the Cousins situation by refusing to pay him market value with the guaranteed money he deserved.

Cousins, a fourth-round pick in 2012 by Washington, started the past three seasons and topped 4,000 yards each time.

Until Cousins signs the tag, Washington would be on the hook for the amount of his tag, which, because he was tagged past year, would be approximately $34.5 million, or 120 percent of his 2017 salary. If he chose to sign the offer sheet from said team, then the Redskins would then have seven days to match.

When a player is given the franchise tag, teams have until July 16 to negotiate a long-term deal.

Ultimately, it seems unlikely a tag-and-trade scenario will actually take place, but it is at least something Washington is considering, for what that is worth. Of course, there are ways Cousins could resist the move by waiting to sign the franchise tag or refusing to report to camp if he's traded somewhere he doesn't want to go.

The window to designate franchise players opens on February 20.

"It was a surprise", Cousins told USA Today Sports' Mike Jones of Tuesday's trade. He mentioned Jacksonville as an example; the Jaguars had not won more than five games since 2010 yet reached the AFC Championship Game this season. Broncos linebacker Von Miller is among the players who has talked about what Cousins would mean to his team this week. I think they're in a good place.

There are expected to be a number of suitors for him and Cousins reiterated that winning remained his top priority.

"It's a unique experience that may only happen one time in my career", Cousins told Sirius XM, referring to free agency.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer agrees, saying a "prime location" for Cousins awaits in the Vikings.

It is a decision that Washington will have to make in the coming weeks.
