Gowdy, chairman of House Oversight Committee, says he will not seek re-election.

He becomes the latest in a string of GOP committee chairmen who have made a decision to leave Congress as the GOP faces what could be a challenging midterm election.

Gowdy is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and will be remembered for leading a two-year investigation into the deadly 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, which focused heavily on Hillary Clinton's role as secretary of state.

"I will always be grateful for the opportunity to serve in the People's House and - prior to Congress - to advocate on behalf of justice in our court systems", Gowdy said on Wednesday.

Gowdy was elected in the 2010 tea party wave that returned control of the House to Republicans.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) announced Wednesday that he will not be seeking reelection in 2018 or running for any other political office.

Rep. Gowdy is one of the highest-ranking Republicans to announce his plans to leave the US Congress.
