The Rob Porter scandal has exposed the real John Kelly

  • White House staff secretary Rob Porter Comes After Abuse Allegations

At one point she even broke down in tears after being asked if she believed the allegations of abuse that are also being made by Porter's first wife Colbie, who she only met a few months ago for the first time.

The White House officials told Hatch's office that the story was the product of a "smear campaign" being orchestrated against Porter by his political enemies. "One of the best and brightest in the administration", Sanders said in a tweet before Shah took the podium in the historic James S Brady press briefing room of the White House. But Hatch largely stood by his sentiments the next day, when he encouraged Porter to "keep a stiff upper lip and work on his problems".

But Hatch was not the only heavyweight tasked with throwing his weight around. "He is a friend, a confidante and a trusted professional". And I told him, "I'm going to tell them the truth"'.

Shah said that Kelly only became "fully aware" of the allegations this week.

Just as troubling, in my mind, are reports that Chief of Staff John Kelly also knew that Porter was never going to receive a security clearance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. But Kelly handed Porter more responsibilities to control the flow of information to the president.

Despite all of this, the White House's first reaction this week to news of the spousal abuse allegations against Porter was to effusively praise and defend him.

White House chief of staff John Kelly learned several weeks ago that multiple White House aides, including staff secretary Rob Porter, would be denied full security clearances, Politico reported Thursday night, citing an unnamed administration official.

In a letter released on Thursday, February 8, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, slammed Republicans for stonewalling his efforts to obtain information about the security clearance process at the White House.

Willoughby and Holderness were both contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of the process of giving the White House senior aide security clearance, which he never received.

White House Counsel Don McGahn was also aware of the allegations but did not act. "The emerging reports were not reflective of the individual who we had come to know". We saw it with the upwards of a dozen women who say Trump harassed them, or worse.

Porter's second ex-wife, Jennifer Willoughby, told CNN that on the honeymoon after their 2009 wedding, "He started calling me names, calling me a "f***ing bitch, ' how I behaved was 'f***ing ridiculous" and most of that was instigated around my not having sex with him often enough on our honeymoon".

Shah said that there was nothing unusual in Porter's working as staff secretary without yet having a security clearance. And if you have not had it already, you will have it, "she said".

The episode has thrust Trump's senior-most aides, many of whom have already been embroiled in controversy related to special counsel Robert Mueller III's Russian Federation investigation, into yet another crisis. But you'd think they might still have some concern for Hope Hicks, the White House communications director with whom Porter's now involved, and who helped craft a statement in his defense when the story was first breaking.
